Best AEO Agency

Direct answer

The best AEO agency depends on what is limiting your AI visibility. A build team fits when the website is the bottleneck; an AEO specialist when your site and SEO foundations are strong; a content agency when expert material is missing; enterprise technical SEO for complex sites; and a consultant for an audit and roadmap. Compare partners on method, AI metrics, implementation, ownership and scope, and avoid guarantees.

Key takeaways

  • Choose an agency model around your main gap: site changes, AEO expertise, expert content, enterprise complexity or an in-house team that needs a roadmap.
  • The six models have different strengths and trade-offs; the comparisons describe agency types, not a measured ranking of named companies.
  • Ask for a written AEO method, a visibility baseline, and reporting on mentions, citation rate, share of voice and AI referrals.
  • Check SEO integration, B2B experience, who implements site changes, what you own after handover and how scope and price are set.
  • Avoid promises of rankings, citations or fixed result dates; measure progress by platform against your own baseline.

Your buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews who to hire. Your competitors show up in the answers. Your brand does not.

That is the gap Answer Engine Optimization closes. AEO is engineering your content and brand signals so AI platforms can find, understand and cite you.

Search "best AEO agency" and you get lists of agency names. Many are written by an agency that sits on its own list. We think the better question is different: which model of AEO agency fits your situation? A specialist, a content shop and a build team solve different problems, so the best AEO agency for you depends on the problem you need solved.

So this page works in three steps. It compares six AEO agency models, each with a verdict and who it is for. Then it gives you a scorecard to test any agency. Overflow is one of the options, and we say where we do not fit.

One honest limit first. Nobody can promise you citations, or a date by which they arrive. Treat any agency that does with caution.

What does an AEO agency actually do?

An AEO agency audits how AI platforms see your brand today, fixes what blocks them from reading your site, builds the evidence and authority they look for, and tracks whether you get cited. The work happens on your site and off it.

At Overflow we organise it in four parts:

  • Access: AI crawlers can reach and render your pages.
  • Structure: clear headings, direct answers, schema and templates that machines can parse.
  • Evidence: original data, case results and named expertise worth quoting.
  • Authority: mentions and citations on other sites that AI platforms trust.

You will also hear GEO, Generative Engine Optimization. In practice the goal is the same: being cited in AI answers. Some agencies use one term, some the other. Read our notes on AEO as a concept and on our GEO agency approach if you want the nuance.

What AEO is not: SEO with a new label. Rankings and AI citations overlap, but they are not the same job. Platforms pull from different sources and reward different signals. Our guide on how to get cited by AI search engines shows where the work differs.

How we compared the AEO agency models

We judged each model on six criteria. Each one comes from a failure we see when companies pick an AEO partner, not from a market-wide study.

  • AEO-specific method: is there a clear process, or just SEO with new wording? Evidence: ask for the steps and the deliverables. A method you cannot see written down is a slogan.
  • Metrics reported: brand mentions, citation rate, share of voice and AI referral traffic, not only rankings. Evidence: these are the measures AI visibility tracking is built on, and rankings alone cannot show whether an AI platform cites you.
  • SEO integration: does the work connect to technical and content SEO? Evidence: AI platforms draw on pages that crawlers can reach and parse, so site and content quality still matter.
  • B2B experience: do they understand long sales cycles and buyer research? Evidence: ask for B2B case studies in your sector.
  • Ownership after handover: do you keep the site, schema and documentation? Evidence: ask what is written into the handover.
  • Price model: audit, project or retainer, and how clearly it is stated. Evidence: a clear scope, cost and timing before you sign.

The table below applies the same criteria to each model. It describes typical traits of a type, drawn from our own experience and from how agencies in this space describe their services. It is not a measured ranking of companies, and any single agency can differ. The only row based on our own published work is model 1.

  • 1. Build team: AEO method built into a site build. Metrics: baseline, mentions, citation rate, share of voice. SEO integration: direct, in the CMS. Ownership: site, schema and documentation. Price model: project. Verifiable example: Overflow's own published work.
  • 2. AEO-first specialist: proprietary framework. Metrics: often AI referrals. SEO integration: usually partial. Ownership: varies. Price model: usually retainer. To verify: ask for the framework and a before and after.
  • 3. Content agency with AEO: editorial method. Metrics: often traffic-weighted. SEO integration: content-led. Ownership: content. Price model: usually retainer. To verify: ask what changed in citations.
  • 4. Enterprise technical SEO: passage-level and crawl work. Metrics: varies. SEO integration: deep. Ownership: varies. Price model: large projects. To verify: ask for minimum project size.
  • 5. Full-service growth agency: AEO as a tracked add-on. Metrics: tool dashboards. SEO integration: broad. Ownership: varies. Price model: bundled retainer. To verify: ask who does the work.
  • 6. Consultant or freelancer: audit and roadmap. Metrics: depends on tools. SEO integration: advisory. Ownership: the roadmap. Price model: fixed fee or day rate. To verify: ask who implements.

Be aware of our bias. Overflow publishes this page and is one of the six models. We put ourselves first in the list only because it is the model we know best, and we list our limits as plainly as the others.

We do not rank named competitors. Each model is judged in general terms, so a verdict describes a type, not a company. Whatever model you pick, read the agency's own case studies and check that they show AI citations, not only traffic.

The 6 AEO agency models, with a verdict for each

Here is the short version. The details follow below.

  • 1. AEO and website build team: best when the site is the bottleneck. Watch out for team size and scope.
  • 2. AEO-first specialist: best when AEO is your only gap. Watch out for needing a second partner for site changes.
  • 3. Content marketing agency with AEO: best when expert-led content drives authority. Watch out for traffic-weighted case studies and premium retainers.
  • 4. Enterprise technical SEO agency: best for large, complex sites. Watch out for high minimum project sizes.
  • 5. Full-service growth agency with an AEO tool: best for SEO, content and paid under one roof. Watch out for AEO as one line item.
  • 6. AEO consultant or freelancer: best for a low-cost audit and roadmap. Watch out for capacity and key person risk.

1. The AEO and website build team (Overflow's model)

Verdict: the best AEO agency model when the website itself is the bottleneck. AEO is engineered into the build, not bolted on afterwards. You get a faster site and AI visibility from one team.

Two people lead the work. Niels Voshol handles strategy, SEO and AI Search, with 40+ B2B projects behind him. Jort Steinebach is a Certified Webflow Developer with 40+ Webflow sites. We start with an AI visibility baseline, then track brand mentions, citation rate and share of voice. You own the site, the schema and the documentation at the end.

Proof: for Boekhouden voor Beginners we saw 589 to 643% organic traffic growth and 230 AI citations. Those are the figures we have published, and they belong to that client only.

Who it is for: B2B scale-ups and mid-market companies on WordPress, HubSpot or Contentful that need a faster site and AI visibility together.

Limits: we are a small senior team. We do not sell paid media or ABM, and we are not the fit for large enterprise programmes. We do not promise rankings. See our AEO agency page, the AI Search playbook, the AEO audit and our Webflow agency work.

2. The AEO-first specialist

Verdict: right if AEO is your only gap and you already have a solid site and strong SEO.

Typical traits: a proprietary framework, a high publishing cadence and reporting on AI referrals. Watch for: you may need a second partner for technical SEO or site changes, because the specialist rarely touches your CMS.

3. The content marketing agency that added AEO

Verdict: strong when editorial quality and expert interviews drive your authority. Good writing with real sources is something AI platforms can quote.

Watch for: case studies weighted to traffic rather than AI citations, and premium retainers. Ask what changed in citations, not only in sessions.

4. The enterprise technical SEO agency

Verdict: for large sites with complex architecture, where passage-level retrieval work and crawl management matter.

Watch for: high minimum project sizes. A mid-market team will often find this too heavy.

5. The full-service growth agency with an AEO tool

Verdict: fits companies that want SEO, content and paid media under one roof, plus visibility tracking.

Watch for: AEO as one line item among many. Ask who does the work and how much of their time goes to AI visibility.

6. The AEO consultant or freelancer

Verdict: the cheapest route to a roadmap and an audit. Best if your team can execute.

Watch for: limited capacity, no build capability and key person risk. An AEO audit is a sensible starting point at this end of the market.

How to choose the best AEO agency for your company

Start with your situation, then test the agency.

Decision rules

  • The site is the bottleneck (every change needs a developer, structure is weak): choose a build team (model 1).
  • You have a content gap (little expert material to cite): choose a content agency with proven AEO work (model 3).
  • Enterprise scale (many templates, markets, complex architecture): choose an enterprise technical SEO agency (model 4).
  • Tight budget: start with a consultant or an audit (model 6).
  • Your in-house team can execute: a specialist or consultant gives you the plan, and you ship it (models 2 and 6).

The scorecard

Ask every agency these five questions and write down the answers.

  • What is your AEO method? You want steps, not slogans.
  • Which AI metrics do you report? Mentions, citation rate, share of voice and AI referrals.
  • Can you show before and after citations? Ask for a baseline and a later measurement.
  • Who implements changes on my site? If the answer is "your developers", plan for that queue.
  • What do I own at the end? Content, schema and documentation should be yours.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed rankings or citations.
  • Reports that contain only keyword rankings.
  • No baseline before the work starts.
  • No tracking of AI answers.
  • Lock-in with no documentation at handover.

If you want to run tracking yourself, see our overview of the best AI optimization tools for visibility.

How much does an AEO agency cost?

It depends on the model, and we will not invent a number. Prices differ widely and change quickly, and we have no approved price bands to publish here yet. In general, an audit or roadmap costs less than a monthly retainer, and enterprise programmes cost the most.

  • Audit: a baseline of where you appear in AI answers and a prioritised roadmap. The cheapest entry point.
  • Project: a defined scope, such as fixing structure and schema on a set of pages or an AEO-ready site build, with a fixed end date.
  • Retainer: ongoing content, authority building and tracking. The cost grows with volume and markets.

When we add anonymized scope-and-price examples, each will state the market, the date and exactly what is included. Until then, use these three things to understand what moves the price:

  • Scope: one audit, a set of pages, or a full programme across markets.
  • Content volume: how much new, evidence-rich content is needed.
  • Site changes: whether templates, schema and structure are fixed by the agency or left to your developers.

Whatever you pick, the agency should state scope, cost and timing before you sign. At Overflow we share all three upfront.

How long does AEO take to show results?

We cannot give you a date, and neither can anyone else. What we can say is what shows up first.

  • Early: a baseline of where you appear today, which prompts you are missing from, and first changes to mentions as access and structure are fixed.
  • Later: a steadier citation rate, share of voice against competitors, and eventually AI referrals and pipeline.

Results also vary by platform. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews do not pull from the same sources, so progress on one does not guarantee progress on another. We explain why in why AI search platforms cite different sources. Measure per platform, and compare against your own baseline.

Can my current SEO agency just add AEO?

Sometimes. A good SEO agency already handles crawling, structure and content, which is much of the foundation. But AEO adds its own work: baselining AI visibility, tracking citations, and building evidence and off-site authority.

Run your current agency through the scorecard above. Can they show a baseline? Do they report AI metrics? Do they do structure and evidence work, not just keywords? If the answers are yes, extend the contract. If not, add a specialist or switch. For a view of SEO-led options, see our list of the best B2B SEO agencies and our page on SEO content marketing agencies.

Looking for a Webflow-specific AEO partner?

This page stays model-based and platform-neutral. If you are on Webflow or planning to move, read our shortlist of the best Webflow AEO agencies.

Not sure where you stand in AI answers today? Start with a baseline. Book an AEO audit or book a meeting and we will show you where your brand appears, where it does not, and what to fix first.

Still have questions?

An AEO agency checks how AI platforms see your brand, removes barriers that prevent them from reading your site, builds evidence and authority, and tracks citations. The work spans your website and other sites. Overflow organises its AEO work around access, structure, evidence and authority.

Start with the gap you need to fix, then ask each agency to explain its AEO method and show an AI visibility baseline. Check that it reports mentions, citation rate, share of voice or AI referrals, connects AEO with SEO, and can implement the work. Confirm who owns the site, schema and documentation after handover.

Cost depends on the model and scope. An audit or roadmap generally costs less than an ongoing retainer, while enterprise programmes cost the most. Compare the amount of content required, the number of pages and markets, and whether the agency or your developers will make site changes. Ask for scope, cost and timing before signing.

There is no reliable universal date for AEO results. Early work can establish where your brand appears and address access or structure issues. Citation rate, share of voice, AI referrals and pipeline may take longer to assess. Results vary by platform, so track each one and compare changes with your own starting baseline.
