What Is AI Visibility? The 3 Types Every Marketer Needs to Know
Direct answer
Winning in AI search is not simply about earning a clickable link. AI visibility is a spectrum: your brand can be cited, mentioned without a link, or excluded from the answer entirely.
AI Visibility Is More Than Earning a Clickable Link
Winning in AI search is not simply about earning a clickable link. AI visibility is a spectrum: your brand can be cited, mentioned without a link, or excluded from the answer entirely.
That distinction matters because buyers increasingly use platforms such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI experiences to research problems, compare providers and shortlist solutions. A brand can influence that journey even when the user never clicks through to its website.
For B2B marketers, the goal is therefore broader than generating referral traffic. You need to understand how often your brand appears, how it is described and whether it is visible for the questions that shape buying decisions.
Every AI Answer Creates One of Three Visibility
Every time an AI platform answers a relevant query, your brand falls into one of three visibility categories.
1. Cited and Linked
Definition The AI answer links to one of your webpages.
Value You gain measurable referral traffic and visibility as a trusted source.
2. Mentioned but Not Linked
Definition The AI answer names your brand but does not link to your website.
Value You build awareness and may prompt a later brand search or shortlist consideration.
3. Not Visible
Definition The AI answer neither mentions nor links to your brand.
Value You can identify important conversations where competitors are visible and your brand is absent.
Most Brand Mentions Do Not Include a Link
Most AI brand mentions do not include a link. In an Ahrefs analysis of more than 31,000 mentions of its own brand across a database of 150 million prompts, only about 28% of mentions contained a citation on average.¹
The proportion varied substantially by platform:
- Perplexity: 51.6% of mentions included a link.
- Google AI Mode: 36.8% included a link.
- ChatGPT: 26.9% included a link.
- Google AI Overviews: 10.7% included a link.
These figures describe Ahrefs’ brand, not a universal benchmark for every company. Citation behaviour depends on the platform, query, category and available sources. The strategic lesson is still important: referral traffic captures only part of your AI visibility.
If your reporting only counts sessions from AI platforms, it will overlook many of the occasions on which those platforms introduced your brand to a potential buyer.
A Small Number of Citations Can Generate Most of Your AI Reach
Citations may occur less frequently than unlinked mentions, yet they can appear on queries with greater demand. This means a small number of linked mentions may generate a disproportionately large share of total visibility.
Ahrefs found that its linked mentions represented:
- 78.4% of impression-weighted visibility on Perplexity, compared with links in 51.6% of individual mentions.
- 71.3% of impression-weighted visibility on Gemini, compared with links in 16.8% of individual mentions.¹
The researchers used Google search volume as a proxy for prompt popularity. They also cautioned that Ahrefs has historically targeted high-volume SEO topics, so the findings do not prove that AI platforms naturally cite more sources for popular prompts.
For marketers, the practical implication is that raw citation counts and potential reach answer different questions. Track both. Ten citations attached to high-demand topics may matter more than fifty citations on prompts that few buyers use.
Unlinked Mentions Can Strengthen Your Brand’s Association With a Topic
Unlinked mentions matter because AI visibility is influenced by how consistently a brand is discussed across the web—not only by links pointing to its domain.
Language models learn relationships between words, topics and entities from large collections of text. When credible sources repeatedly discuss a company in connection with a specific problem or category, they create a clearer association between the brand and that subject.
Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found that branded web mentions had the strongest measured correlation with visibility in Google AI Overviews: 0.664. That relationship was stronger than Domain Rating at 0.326, referring domains at 0.295 and backlinks at 0.218.²
Correlation does not prove that mentions directly cause AI visibility. Strong brands may simply earn more coverage and appear more often in AI answers for other reasons. Still, the finding supports a broader AEO strategy: build a credible presence beyond your own website.
For B2B companies, that can include:
- Being included in industry publications and expert roundups.
- Contributing original research, benchmarks or proprietary data.
- Appearing in relevant podcasts, webinars and YouTube videos.
- Earning detailed reviews and partner mentions.
- Maintaining consistent positioning across trusted third-party profiles.
The goal is not to manufacture mentions. It is to give reputable sources concrete reasons to associate your company with the expertise you want to own.
The Most Valuable AI Visibility Format Depends on Search Intent
AI answers take several forms, and the most valuable visibility opportunity depends on the user’s intent and your business model.
Step-by-Step Guides Can Position Your Brand as the Expert Source
Procedural answers explain how to complete a task. Service businesses and specialist providers can earn visibility by publishing clear, experience-based guidance that an AI platform can use as supporting evidence.
Direct Answers Build Authority but Often Generate Few Clicks
Simple factual queries often produce an immediate answer and few clicks. A citation can still build authority, but these queries may have limited commercial value. Prioritise direct-answer topics that connect naturally to a buyer problem rather than chasing citations with no relevance to revenue.
Video Citations Reach Buyers Who Prefer Watching Over Reading
Video gives buyers an alternative way to consume complex information. Ahrefs’ later cross-platform research found that YouTube mentions had a particularly strong correlation with AI visibility, although this again does not establish causation.³ Product demonstrations, expert explanations and webinars can therefore support visibility beyond written content.
Product Comparisons Can Influence Which Providers Buyers Shortlist
Comparison answers are especially valuable because they appear close to a decision. For B2B companies, the equivalent of a consumer “best products” query may be “best CRM for a European manufacturing company” or “top SOC providers for a mid-market organisation.”
To compete, make your ideal use case, differentiators, proof and limitations explicit. AI systems need accessible evidence to understand when your company belongs in a shortlist.
Measure Mentions, Citations and Absence to Find Your Visibility Gaps
You can use Ahrefs Brand Radar—or another AI visibility platform—to establish where your brand sits across the three categories.
Track five metrics:
- Mentions show how often AI answers name your brand.
- Citations show how often those answers link to your website.
- Impressions estimate the potential reach of that visibility.
- Share of voice compares your presence with relevant competitors.
- Brand gaps reveal important prompts where the category or competitors appear but your brand does not.
Start with a defined set of commercial topics and named competitors. Review the underlying answers rather than relying only on a dashboard total: a positive mention, an inaccurate description and a citation to an outdated page should not be treated as equivalent outcomes.
Then turn the gaps into action. Improve pages that lack clear answers, develop evidence for topics where your expertise is weak, and earn credible third-party coverage where competitors currently dominate.
If your team wants to understand how AI platforms describe your company, where competitors outperform you and which improvements deserve priority, Overflow can turn those findings into a measurable AEO roadmap.
AI visibility is ultimately broader than AI traffic. The companies that measure citations, unlinked mentions and absence together will have a far more accurate view of their position in AI-assisted buying journeys.
