Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft’s family of AI assistants for finding information, generating content and completing tasks across consumer and workplace products.

Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft’s family of AI assistants for searching, writing, analysing information and completing tasks across consumer and workplace products. The name does not refer to one fixed tool: the available capabilities and data sources depend on the Copilot product, licence and context.

What is Microsoft Copilot?

At its core, Copilot is a conversational interface that interprets prompts and generates responses with large language models. Depending on the experience, it can answer questions, draft or transform content, create images and assist inside Microsoft applications.

Which Copilot products are different?

Microsoft Copilot serves general personal use, while Microsoft 365 Copilot brings AI assistance into workplace tools and organisational data. Copilot Studio is a low-code environment for building and managing specialised agents and workflows—an important distinction as the agentic web develops. Buyers should therefore compare the exact product and licence, not “Copilot” as one feature set.

How does Microsoft 365 Copilot use business data?

Microsoft 365 Copilot can ground responses in web information and authorised organisational content through Microsoft Graph. Its grounding process follows the user’s existing access permissions. This resembles the principle behind retrieval-augmented generation: relevant information is retrieved and supplied as context before an answer is generated.

Why does Copilot matter for B2B marketers?

Copilot can support research, summarisation and content production, but its output still requires human review. A practical approach is to use it for first-pass analysis and variations, then apply subject expertise, source checks and editorial judgement. This keeps B2B content marketing useful instead of turning automation into generic output.

How does Microsoft Copilot relate to AI Search?

When Copilot uses web search, it can show the queries sent to Bing and the sources used. That makes Copilot a discovery surface where a B2B brand may be mentioned or cited before a buyer visits its website. Understanding how AI systems retrieve and cite sources helps teams evaluate this visibility.

Measure Copilot visibility across a stable set of buyer prompts: record brand mentions, cited URLs, competitors and sentiment, then repeat the tests over time. An AI Search optimisation programme can connect those findings to clearer website content, stronger external evidence and better source eligibility.

More B2B. Less generic.
