Google AI Mode
Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience in Google Search that uses Gemini and Google’s search systems to answer complex questions with AI-generated responses and supporting web links.
What is Google AI Mode?
Google AI Mode is a conversational AI Search experience within Google Search. Instead of only returning a traditional list of results, AI Mode can generate a detailed answer, surface supporting web links and let users continue their research with follow-up questions.
It is designed for questions that require exploration, comparison or multiple steps. That makes AI Mode especially relevant to B2B buyers researching a problem, comparing approaches or evaluating potential providers.
How does Google AI Mode work?
AI Mode combines Google’s Gemini models with its existing Search systems and web index. One important technique is query fan-out. Google can break one complex question into multiple related searches across subtopics and sources, then synthesize the retrieved information into an answer.
For example, a buyer asking “What is the best CMS for an international B2B marketing team?” may trigger searches around scalability, localization, integrations, SEO, editor experience and specific CMS platforms. A page can therefore become relevant to part of the answer even when it does not target the exact wording of the original prompt.
This retrieval process is part of the broader shift toward AI Search, where discovery increasingly happens through generated answers rather than only through a ranked list of links.
Google AI Mode vs. AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are related, but they are different search experiences. AI Overviews appear within the traditional Google results page and provide an AI-generated summary for selected searches. AI Mode is a more conversational environment built for deeper exploration and follow-up questions.
The distinction also matters for visibility. Research discussed in Overflow’s analysis of why AI Search platforms cite different sources found that AI Mode and AI Overviews can reach similar conclusions while citing substantially different sources. Marketing teams should therefore avoid treating visibility in one Google AI experience as proof of visibility in the other.
Why does Google AI Mode matter for B2B marketers?
The buyer journey can increasingly happen before someone visits your website. A potential customer can ask Google to explain a problem, compare solutions, identify selection criteria and recommend providers inside one conversational search journey.
That changes the visibility problem. Ranking for one keyword is still valuable, but it no longer captures every way a company can be discovered. A brand can be cited as a source, mentioned in an answer or excluded while competitors are surfaced.
Overflow’s point of view is that this does not make the website less important. It changes the website’s job. A B2B website is no longer only a destination for traffic; it is also part of the information layer that search engines and AI systems can use to understand a company, its expertise and where it fits in the market.
That is why we treat AI Mode as part of Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) rather than as an isolated Google feature. The commercial objective is to make the brand easier to discover, understand and reference during high-intent research.
How do you optimize for Google AI Mode?
Google does not require separate AI-specific markup or a special submission process for AI Mode. Its guidance is that the existing technical requirements and SEO fundamentals for Google Search continue to apply to its generative AI features.
For B2B teams, that means publishing useful original content, keeping important pages crawlable and indexable, answering buyer questions clearly, maintaining strong internal links and making factual information accurate and current.
Clear topic coverage also matters because query fan-out can retrieve information for supporting subquestions. Build connected content around the complete decision journey rather than creating isolated pages for individual keywords.
Accurate schema markup and entity SEO can make information and relationships more explicit, but neither should be treated as a direct AI Mode ranking hack. Current evidence does not show that adding schema alone reliably increases AI citations.

How should you measure Google AI Mode visibility?
Do not reduce AI Mode performance to referral traffic. A buyer may encounter a brand in an answer without clicking immediately. Track whether the brand is mentioned, whether its pages are cited, which topics produce visibility, which competitors appear and how the brand is described.
An AI visibility audit can turn those observations into a repeatable prompt set and identify the commercially relevant questions where your brand is missing or misrepresented.
Key takeaway
Google AI Mode turns Google Search into a more conversational research experience. For B2B marketers, the important shift is from optimizing only for rankings and clicks toward also making your company and expertise useful enough to be retrieved, understood and referenced inside AI-generated answers.
More B2B. Less generic.
