Share of Voice

Share of voice is the percentage of measured visibility or advertising activity a brand holds compared with selected competitors in a defined market, channel and period.

What is share of voice?

Share of voice (SOV) measures how visible a brand is compared with its competitors within a defined market, channel and period. It expresses your share of advertising activity, impressions, mentions or search visibility as a percentage of the competitive total. Within a broader B2B marketing strategy, it shows whether your brand is becoming more or less prominent.

How do you calculate share of voice?

The basic formula is: your brand’s measured activity divided by the total activity of all selected brands, multiplied by 100. If your company receives 300 of 1,000 measured category mentions, its share of voice is 30%.

The input depends on the channel. Organic search SOV can be weighted using rankings and search volume. Google Ads uses the related impression-share metric: received impressions divided by estimated eligible impressions. Social and PR tools commonly compare relevant brand mentions.

Which channels should B2B teams measure?

Measure each channel separately. Paid media SOV can reveal auction or budget pressure, organic search SOV shows visibility across an agreed keyword set, and social or PR SOV tracks how much of the relevant conversation involves your brand. Keep the competitor set, geography, channel and measurement window consistent. Your chosen keywords should also reflect the right search intent, not simply generate a large headline percentage.

What does share of voice mean in AI Search?

AI Search share of voice measures how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers compared with selected competitors. A practical calculation is the percentage of tracked prompts where the brand is mentioned, recommended or cited. These should be reported as separate metrics: a mention is not automatically a recommendation, and a citation shows source visibility rather than preference.

Prompt selection determines the result. Build a stable set around real buyer questions, segment it by topic and funnel stage, and test across relevant platforms. An AI visibility audit can reveal which questions surface competitors instead of your brand. For companies treating this as an ongoing acquisition channel, an AI Search strategy should connect visibility to accurate brand representation and commercial intent.

How should share of voice be interpreted?

Share of voice is a diagnostic metric, not proof of business impact. A percentage can rise because your visibility improved or because a competitor became less active. Track it alongside qualified demand, pipeline, conversion data and market share.

Overflow recommends reporting SOV by channel and buyer-journey stage instead of blending everything into one number. This makes changes explainable and turns visibility data into decisions. The same principle applies when measuring surfaces such as Google AI Mode, where visibility can vary by query and cited source.

What is excess share of voice?

Excess share of voice (ESOV) is the difference between a brand’s advertising share of voice and its market share. A positive ESOV means advertising presence exceeds current market share. Research has associated this pattern with growth, but the relationship varies by category, brand size and media effectiveness. Treat ESOV as one input to investment decisions, supported by the broader evidence in your keyword and demand research.

More B2B. Less generic.
