Search Volume

Search volume estimates how often a keyword is searched, usually shown as average monthly searches for a specific country, region, or global market.

What is search volume?

Search volume is an SEO metric that estimates how often people search for a specific keyword or query, usually expressed as average monthly searches. It is one of the most widely used metrics in keyword research because it gives marketers a quick indication of how much search demand exists around a topic.

Search volume should always be treated as an estimate rather than an exact count. Tools such as Ahrefs and Semrush model search demand using their own datasets and methodologies, which means the reported number can differ between platforms.

What does monthly search volume mean?

Monthly search volume usually refers to the average number of searches a keyword receives per month over a longer period, commonly the previous 12 months. This smooths out short-term fluctuations and gives a more stable view of demand.

That also means the number can hide seasonality. A keyword may receive almost no searches for most of the year and then spike sharply during one season. The reported monthly average can therefore look steady even when real demand varies significantly from month to month.

What is local search volume?

Local search volume shows how often a keyword is searched within a specific geographic market. Depending on the SEO tool, this can refer to a country, region, state, province or city.

For example, a keyword might have 2,000 monthly searches in the United States but only 100 in the Netherlands. For a B2B company selling only in the Netherlands, the Dutch volume is usually more relevant than the larger US number.

Local volume is particularly useful when evaluating market-specific demand, building country or language strategies, and prioritizing keywords for businesses with a defined geographic ICP.

What is global search volume?

Global search volume is the combined estimated monthly search volume for a keyword across all countries covered by a keyword database. Ahrefs and Semrush both distinguish between country-level volume and global volume.

Global volume can help identify international demand, but it can also be misleading if your business only serves a small number of markets. A keyword with 50,000 global searches may be far less valuable if only a small fraction of that demand exists in the countries where you operate.

Why can search volume differ between tools?

Search volume figures are estimates. Different SEO platforms use different data sources, models, update frequencies and keyword-grouping methods. Google Keyword Planner can also group closely related terms together, which can make its reported volume different from third-party SEO tools.

For that reason, search volume is best used as a relative metric for comparing opportunities rather than as a precise forecast of how many people will visit your website.

Does search volume equal potential traffic?

No. Search volume measures search demand, not website traffic. A page ranking for a keyword will share clicks with other organic results, ads, featured results and other SERP features. Some searches also end without any click at all.

Pages also tend to rank for many related keywords at the same time. That is why Traffic Potential can sometimes be more useful than the volume of one exact keyword. Traffic Potential estimates the broader organic traffic opportunity behind the topic.

How should you use search volume?

Search volume is most useful as one input in a broader prioritization framework. It can help compare the relative demand for different topics, but it should be considered alongside Keyword Difficulty, search intent, Traffic Potential, business relevance and the quality of the existing search results.

A low-volume keyword can still be extremely valuable if it signals strong commercial intent. For example, a niche B2B service query with 50 monthly searches may be more valuable than a broad informational keyword with 10,000 searches if the smaller query is much closer to a buying decision.

What is a good search volume?

There is no universal threshold for a good search volume. The right number depends on your market, website authority, ICP and commercial model. In large consumer markets, thousands of monthly searches may be normal. In specialized B2B markets, a keyword with only tens or hundreds of searches can still represent significant demand.

The more useful question is not “Is the search volume high?” but “Is there enough relevant demand for this topic to justify creating or improving a page?”

Does search volume still matter in AI Search?

Yes, but it is less complete on its own. Traditional search volume is built around explicit search queries, while AI Search users often ask longer questions, add context and continue with follow-up prompts. Many of these prompt variations will not appear as separate high-volume keywords.

For AI Search, search volume is therefore best used as a signal of established demand around a topic. It can show which problems and concepts matter to buyers, while broader topic research, entity coverage and question analysis help capture the larger set of ways people may express that demand in generative search.

Why search volume matters for B2B SEO

For B2B marketers, search volume helps quantify demand before investing in new content or landing pages. Overflow uses it as part of a wider prioritization model for Webflow SEO and AI Search projects, combining demand with intent, competitiveness and business value.

The goal is not to chase the largest numbers. It is to identify the topics where relevant buyers are searching, understand how much demand exists in the markets that matter, and build pages that can capture that demand across both traditional search and AI-driven discovery.

More B2B. Less generic.
