Keyword Research

Keyword research is the process of finding, evaluating and prioritizing the search terms and questions an audience uses to discover information, products or services.

What is keyword research?

Keyword research is the process of finding, evaluating and prioritizing the words and questions people use when searching for information, products or services. It connects audience demand to content, SEO and paid-search decisions. For a complete B2B workflow, Overflow’s B2B keyword research guide explains how to move from initial ideas to an actionable content plan.

How does keyword research work?

Start with your products, services, customer problems, use cases and sales questions. Expand these seed topics with data from search platforms, keyword tools, competitor pages and first-party sources such as site search or sales conversations. Then group terms according to their underlying search intent: informational, commercial, navigational or transactional.

The goal is not to collect the largest possible list. It is to identify searches your company can answer credibly and connect them to the correct page type.

Which keyword metrics matter?

Search volume estimates how often a keyword is searched within a defined market and period. Keyword difficulty estimates how competitive organic ranking may be, while cost-per-click and paid competition can indicate advertiser interest. These figures vary by tool and should be treated as directional estimates rather than exact demand.

Also assess relevance, business value, current ranking, SERP composition and the authority of competing pages. A lower-volume query with clear buying intent can be more valuable than a broad term with much larger volume.

How should keywords become content?

Group closely related terms that share the same intent and can be satisfied by one page. Create separate pages when the audience expects meaningfully different answers. Connect supporting pages to broader hubs so the website develops topical authority instead of publishing isolated keyword pages.

Overflow recommends assigning every priority keyword cluster a page type, owner, buyer stage and commercial next step before writing. For Webflow websites, this research should feed directly into the site architecture, templates and ongoing Webflow SEO strategy. This prevents duplicate content and makes the research useful to marketing, website and sales teams.

How does keyword research relate to AI Search?

AI Search expands research beyond short keyword strings. Buyers ask detailed questions, add constraints and continue with follow-up prompts. Systems such as Google AI Mode can use query fan-out to run related searches across several subtopics before generating an answer. Understanding how AI Search engines retrieve information helps teams map the questions and supporting facts a buyer may need.

Traditional keyword data remains useful because search demand reveals established language and topics, but it should be supplemented with buyer questions, prompt testing and competitor visibility across AI platforms. Overflow recommends organizing this combined research around decision journeys rather than treating every prompt as a separate content target.

More B2B. Less generic.
