Keyword Difficulty

Keyword Difficulty (KD) is an SEO metric that estimates how difficult it may be to rank in Google’s top 10 for a keyword.

What is Keyword Difficulty?

Keyword Difficulty (KD) is an SEO metric that estimates how difficult it may be to rank on the first page of Google for a specific keyword. Most SEO tools express difficulty on a scale from 0 to 100, where a higher score generally indicates a more competitive search result.

In Ahrefs, Keyword Difficulty is based primarily on the backlink profiles of the pages currently ranking in the top 10. The tool looks at how many referring domains point to those ranking pages and converts that signal into a logarithmic 0–100 score. A low KD can indicate that the current results have relatively few backlinks, but it does not mean a page will automatically rank.

How should you use Keyword Difficulty?

Keyword Difficulty is most useful as a filtering and prioritization metric during keyword research. It can help teams identify terms that may require fewer link-building resources and compare opportunities within a larger keyword set.

It should not be used in isolation. Ahrefs’ KD does not account for factors such as content quality, search intent, topical relevance or the authority of your own website. A manual review of the search results is therefore important before deciding whether a keyword is realistically attainable.

What is a good Keyword Difficulty score?

There is no universal “good” KD score. A new website may prefer lower-difficulty keywords, while an established site with strong authority and relevant content can compete for much harder terms. The right threshold depends on the strength of the domain, the quality of the competing pages and how commercially important the keyword is.

Overflow recommends combining KD with search volume, search intent and Traffic Potential. A low-difficulty keyword with weak business relevance is usually less valuable than a moderately difficult term that closely matches a real buying decision.

Why does Keyword Difficulty matter for B2B SEO?

For B2B teams, KD helps estimate the effort needed to compete for commercially relevant queries. It can reveal opportunities where useful service pages, comparison pages or educational content have a realistic chance of ranking without requiring an excessive backlink campaign.

On a Webflow SEO project, Overflow uses difficulty as one input alongside intent, traffic potential, business value and the current SERP. The objective is not to chase the easiest keywords, but to prioritize the queries most likely to produce relevant visibility and pipeline.

More B2B. Less generic.
