Softr vs Webflow: A Marketing Website Builder vs an App Builder

Softr builds portals and internal apps. Webflow builds marketing sites. See how they compare on SEO, design, CMS, cost and security, and when to use both.

Transparency statement

We independently review and test every app in our app comparison articles. We don't earn any commissions on the link or the platforms. In full transparency, we are a Webflow partner, and that's because we independently tested all the CMS platforms throughout the years. In our opinion, Webflow is the best for B2B marketing teams from mid-market to enterprise organizations worldwide.

Key takeaways

Softr and Webflow solve different problems. Webflow builds public marketing websites. Softr builds logged-in portals and internal tools on top of business data. Softr says so itself: on its Softr vs Webflow page it states that the two solve different problems and are often used together.

You are probably in one of two situations. You are a B2B marketing lead or founder shortlisting a platform for the company website. Or you already know which site you want and are asking whether a client portal belongs on the same platform.

A note on bias before we start. Overflow is a Webflow Certified Partner. Jort Steinebach, our Certified Webflow Developer, has built 40+ Webflow sites. We build marketing sites, so we lean toward Webflow for that job. We also tell you below where Softr is the better choice, because for portals it often is.

The decision rule is short. Marketing site: Webflow. Portal or internal tool: Softr. Many teams run both. The rest of this article shows how to apply that rule, what each platform costs, and where each one stops.

Softr vs Webflow in short: which should you choose?

Pick by the job, not by the platform:

  • Public B2B marketing site, content hub, campaign landing pages: Webflow.
  • Client portal, dashboard or internal tool on Airtable, HubSpot or Google Sheets data: Softr.
  • Both: a Webflow marketing site, with a Softr portal embedded in it or on a subdomain.

Softr describes itself as a full-stack app builder for portals and internal tools. It also says it is not intended to replace Webflow for highly custom, design-heavy marketing sites (Softr). Webflow's own integration page describes Softr as a no-code app builder for portals, dashboards and internal tools (Webflow). Both vendors draw the line in the same place.

What is Webflow, and what is Softr?

Webflow is a visual site builder with a built-in CMS and hosting. You design layouts on a canvas, publish to Webflow's hosting, and manage content through CMS collections. A CMS collection is a group of items that share one template, such as blog posts, case studies or team members. See our overview of the Webflow CMS for how that works in practice.

Softr is a no-code app builder. According to Webflow's integration page, it expanded in 2025 from a front end builder to a full-stack platform by adding native Databases and Workflows, and it connects to Airtable, Google Sheets, HubSpot and SQL databases (Webflow). Softr handles login and permissions on the server side.

Two terms help here. A portal is a logged-in area where clients, partners or staff see their own data, such as project status or invoices. An app user is anyone who logs in to a Softr app. App users matter because Softr's pricing is built around them.

Side by side comparison

This comparison will help you understand the strengths of each platform and decide which is best for your specific needs.

Softr vs Webflow side by side

Each row names a winner for that criterion, or says it depends. We have not invented benchmark numbers. Where a claim is Softr's own view, it is labeled.

  • Main use case: Webflow builds public marketing sites and content. Softr builds portals, dashboards and internal tools. Winner: depends on the job.
  • Design control: Webflow gives visual control over layout, interactions and responsive behavior. Softr uses block based layouts and customizable app layouts. Softr says it is not a replacement for Webflow's design system. Winner: Webflow.
  • CMS and content: Webflow has a native CMS built for editorial content. Softr works with live data from databases and sheets. Winner: Webflow for content, Softr for business data.
  • SEO controls: Webflow has dedicated controls for titles, meta descriptions, canonicals, sitemaps and redirects (details below). Softr is built for logged-in apps and supports simple public pages. Winner: Webflow.
  • Speed: Webflow hosts on a global CDN. We have no sourced speed figures for Softr, so we do not rate it. Winner: depends on the build.
  • Authentication and permissions: Softr includes built-in authentication, user groups and permissions. Webflow needs custom code or third party tools for logins, which is Softr's view of the gap. Winner: Softr.
  • Data sources: Softr connects natively to Airtable, HubSpot, Google Sheets, Notion and SQL, plus its own databases. Webflow's CMS holds content, and its APIs can connect external data. Winner: Softr.
  • Integrations: Both connect to other tools through Zapier, Make and APIs. Webflow has a wide marketing stack ecosystem. Winner: depends on the stack.
  • Editing by marketing: Webflow lets marketers publish CMS content without developers once collections are structured. Softr lets non-developers build and change apps. Winner: Webflow for content, Softr for app changes.
  • Scalability: Webflow scales in pages, CMS items and bandwidth by plan. Softr scales in app users, records and workflow actions by plan. Winner: depends on what you scale.
  • Pricing model: Webflow charges per site. Softr charges by builders and app users. Winner: depends.
  • Learning curve: Webflow rewards design and CMS knowledge. Softr is faster to a working app. Winner: Softr for apps, Webflow for sites.

Softr's own summary puts it this way: Webflow is best for visually rich public websites, while Softr is designed for no-code business apps with databases, workflows and AI functionality (Softr). We agree with that split.

SEO: which platform is better for ranking a B2B site?

For a public B2B site that has to rank, Webflow is the stronger fit. We do not promise rankings on any platform. What a platform can do is give you the controls to build a site search engines can read.

Webflow's pricing page lists the SEO controls it offers: custom title tags and meta descriptions for every page, alt text, control over whether individual CMS items are indexed, global or page level canonical URLs, an auto generated XML sitemap, robots controls, structured data, and 301 redirects. It also supports localized sites for international audiences. Our guide to Webflow SEO explains how we use these, and our Webflow SEO services cover technical SEO, CMS architecture and redirects.

Softr is built for logged-in apps. Its own page says it works well for simple marketing sites, landing pages and service listings, but it is not intended for highly custom, design-heavy marketing sites (Softr). We have not verified Softr's specific SEO controls such as schema or sitemap handling, so we do not rate them here. Check them on Softr's documentation if SEO on Softr pages matters to you.

Content hubs are where Webflow's structure pays off. CMS collections with page templates let you publish many pages from one design, such as resources, case studies and service pages. Combine that with schema markup and you have a site that is easy for both search engines and AI answer engines to parse.

Design control, CMS and editing without developers

Webflow gives you visual control of layout, spacing, interactions and responsive behavior. You build reusable components and a design system, so every new page stays on brand. On the Premium plan, Webflow's CMS supports up to 20,000 items and 40 collections, according to Memberstack and FlowNinja. That covers most B2B marketing sites.

Softr is fast to ship. Its block based layouts get an app live quickly, but customization has limits, and Softr itself says it is not a replacement for Webflow's design system. For a portal behind a login, that trade is usually fine. For a homepage that has to position your brand, it is not.

On editing, marketing teams publish in Webflow without developers once the CMS is structured. That is how we build it in Playbook 01: a modular CMS, then handover with live training, video tutorials and documentation. The goal is a site your team owns and updates itself.

Can Webflow do what Softr does? Portals, logins and live data

Not natively, and it is better to say so. Webflow is not built for app logic, granular permissions or workflows on live business data. Webflow Memberships exist, but Webflow's own integration page notes they cannot cover everything a portal needs (Webflow). Softr makes the same point from the other side: building a client portal in Webflow typically needs custom code and several third party tools for authentication, permissions and file handling.

You have three ways to add that layer, all described on Webflow's Softr integration page:

  1. Embed a Softr page or block with a Code Embed element and an iframe. Authentication and database queries run inside the iframe.
  2. Automate with Zapier, Make or n8n, for example to send a Webflow form submission into a Softr database or mirror CMS items into a Softr table.
  3. Use the Webflow and Softr APIs for full control over data sync and user provisioning. This needs server side development.

Know the caveats before you commit. There is no native integration between the two. Interactive elements such as edit buttons on Softr table blocks can fail inside an iframe, so test every block. Your site analytics cannot measure activity inside the iframe, so conversion tracking needs separate setup in Softr.

If you go this route, our pages on Webflow custom code and Webflow integrations explain what is possible inside a Webflow build.

Softr vs Webflow pricing

The two platforms price different things, so compare the logic before the numbers.

Webflow charges per site. After the May 2026 plan change, the CMS and Business plans merged into Premium. Current list prices billed yearly are Basic at $15 a month, Premium at $25 a month, Team at $2,500 a month, and Enterprise on custom quote. Workspace seats cost extra (FlowNinja, Memberstack). Premium is the plan content-driven marketing sites normally need, because Basic has no CMS. Teams with larger needs can look at Webflow Enterprise.

Softr scales with logins. It has a free plan, then paid plans based on builders and app users. Softr's help docs list Basic at $19, Pro at $99 and Business at $329 a month billed annually. Some third party sites list other figures, such as $49, $139 and $269. Those look like older pricing, so confirm on each vendor's pricing page before you budget.

A three year example, using list prices only (annual billing, 36 months):

  • Webflow Premium: $25 × 36 = $900.
  • Softr Basic: $19 × 36 = $684.
  • Softr Pro: $99 × 36 = $3,564.
  • Softr Business: $329 × 36 = $11,844.

Read these carefully. They are list prices only. They exclude build costs, Workspace seats, extra builders, extra app users, extra custom domains and add-ons. They also compare tools that do different jobs, so the cheaper line is not automatically the better buy. If your portal serves many clients, the user count drives Softr's bill. If your site publishes lots of content, Webflow's plan limits and seats drive yours.

Speed, security and scalability

Webflow speed. Webflow hosting includes a CDN that routes each visitor to the nearest server (Webflow pricing). On Overflow builds we see Lighthouse scores of 95 to 98+. Those are our results on our own projects, not a platform guarantee, because speed depends on how a site is built. Our Webflow page speed guide covers what we do. A real example: we migrated Nedcargo from WordPress to Webflow in 4 weeks. We have no sourced speed figures for Softr, so we do not compare.

Security. Softr handles authentication and permissions on the server side, and security is managed in the platform. According to a Catalytics review (a Softr partner, so treat it as third party), two factor authentication starts on the Business plan and single sign-on is only on Enterprise. Webflow's hosting is managed too, so you do not patch plugins or servers. Enterprise Webflow adds SSO, per LitExtension's summary of the plan.

Scalability limits. Each platform caps something different:

  • Webflow: CMS items, collections and bandwidth by plan. Premium includes 20,000 CMS items, 40 collections and 50 GB of bandwidth, with bandwidth add-ons available (FlowNinja).
  • Softr: app users by plan. On Softr's docs, Business allows up to 500 client users, and above that you move to Enterprise (Softr docs).

Who should choose which: recommendations by situation

Use the situation, not the brand, to decide.

Choose Webflow when you need:

  • a B2B marketing site that positions your company
  • a content hub with structured, reusable templates
  • campaign landing pages your team ships without developers
  • an international site with localization

Choose Softr when you need:

  • a client or partner portal with logins
  • internal tools, CRMs or dashboards
  • apps built on Airtable, Google Sheets or HubSpot data

Use both when the public site and the logged-in area have different jobs. Run the marketing site on Webflow at your main domain. Add a Softr portal, embedded or on a subdomain. This is the setup both vendors describe.

Look elsewhere if your site is really a SaaS product, if you want a headless setup, or if another builder fits your team better. Our other comparisons cover those cases: Webflow vs WordPress, Webflow vs Framer, Webflow vs Contentful and Webflow vs HubSpot.

Switching from another platform to Webflow without losing SEO

If your marketing site sits on WordPress, HubSpot or Softr pages today, moving it to Webflow is a project you can protect. Two things safeguard SEO equity: a redirect map that sends every old URL to its new equivalent, and a content migration that keeps titles, headings and internal links intact. No migration can promise a specific outcome, but a planned one avoids avoidable losses.

Start with our guides to WordPress to Webflow migration, Webflow migration and 301 redirects in Webflow. Our example is Nedcargo, a WordPress to Webflow migration we completed in 4 weeks.

FAQ

Is Softr a Webflow alternative?

Only partly. Softr positions itself as a Webflow alternative for portals and apps, but it says itself that it is not intended to replace Webflow for highly custom, design-heavy marketing sites. For a public B2B website, Webflow is the better fit.

Can I build a website with Softr?

Yes, simple ones. Softr supports simple websites, landing pages and service listings, especially when they connect to live data. If the site must carry your brand and publish lots of content, Webflow suits it better.

Can Softr and Webflow work together?

Yes. There is no native integration, but you can embed a Softr page or block in Webflow with a Code Embed iframe, sync data with Zapier, Make or n8n, or connect through the APIs.

Is Softr cheaper than Webflow?

It depends on the plan and the user count. Softr Basic lists at $19 a month and Webflow Premium at $25 a month, both billed annually. Softr's cost grows with app users and builders, so a busy portal can cost far more. Confirm both on the vendors' pricing pages.

Is Webflow good for client portals?

Not on its own. Webflow Memberships cover some cases, but portals with roles, permissions and live business data usually need an added layer such as a Softr app. For the public site around the portal, Webflow is a strong choice.

Next step: build the marketing site on Webflow

If you are weighing a platform for your company website, the marketing site belongs on Webflow, and a portal can sit next to it when you need one. At Overflow we build that marketing site through Playbook 01: B2B Marketing Website. It covers strategy, a Figma design system, Webflow development, content migration, QA and handover, so your marketing team can publish without developers.
